The government of Nikos Christodoulides is consistently and persistently pursuing efforts to break the deadlock and resume substantive negotiations, said Finance Minister Makis Keravnos in his commemorative address at the national memorial service for the heroes of the Galata Community, held at the Church of Panagia Odigitria, on Sunday, emphasizing that preserving the memory of our heroes is inextricably linked to the struggle for a free, safe, and reunified, free from occupation and its consequences.

He noted that the Government remains firmly committed to international law, as well as to the principles and values of the European Union, and continues its efforts to find a just, sustainable, and workable solution to the Cyprus problem, “a solution based on the relevant United Nations resolutions and the agreed framework,” while respecting the rights of all lawful residents of Cyprus.

Mr. Keravnos emphasized that “our historical responsibility compels us to keep alive the desire for freedom and reunification,” adding that “we do not renounce our right to strive for a future of peace, security, and prosperity for the entire Cypriot people.”

Referring to the sacrifice of the six heroes of Galata—Chrysanthos Mylonas, Evagoras Papachristoforou, Andreas Geroudis, Georgios Zacharias, Iakovos Geroudis, and Panikos Athanasiou, he noted that “they are shining examples of love for the homeland, heroism, and unparalleled bravery,” adding that through their lives and sacrifice, despite their young age, “each in his own way, they served the ideals of freedom and left an indelible mark on the history of Cyprus.”

Continuing, the Minister of Finance noted that “their sacrifice stands as a timeless example of courage, self-sacrifice, and patriotism, as well as a precious legacy for younger generations,” emphasizing that “we have a duty to keep their memory alive, because peoples without a historical memory have no future.”

Mr. Keravnos added that today’s memorial service is not merely an act of honoring our heroes, but above all a promise to them and to future generations that we will not allow oblivion to obscure the historical truth. As he noted, the memory of our heroes is a living part of our identity, a source of lessons, and a constant reminder of the principles and ideals we must uphold.
