EuroLeague: Bodiroga confirms expansion to 24 teams

These are the changes coming
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The number of EuroLeague teams will increase from 20 to 24 starting next season, as confirmed by Dejan Bodiroga on a Serbian TV show.

“The next steps for the EuroLeague involve expansion and the franchise model. Next year, we’re changing the competition format: from the current 20 teams, where everyone plays everyone else, we’re moving to 24 teams, essentially creating two conferences. “We have not yet determined the criteria by which these conferences will be formed,” said the EuroLeague CEO.

“The EuroLeague has never been stronger than it is today. We are growing and progressing according to our plan and schedule. I’ll try to give you a brief overview of the current situation in the EuroLeague, with a few details. Last year, more than 3,300,000 fans filled our arenas, while more than 500,000,000 viewers watched our games on television during the season—a number that remains a record to this day. In addition, we’ve seen significant growth and record-breaking engagement on social media. There are more and more sponsors, partners, and fans. If you look at all the numbers, the EuroLeague is experiencing a period of very positive momentum. That was one of the reasons we met in Italy last week to discuss the future of the competition. “We had a substantive and important meeting to determine the next steps,” he added.

As for the new franchises, he said: “Franchise spots are also coming; we’ve received many inquiries and proposals from teams coming from either the EuroCup or other competitions. They have submitted binding proposals, expressing their desire to become members of the EuroLeague in the future. Among them are, of course, Red Star and Partizan. I believe that both clubs are held in high regard by our board of directors. Given the relevant process, their commitment, and their efforts to meet all the necessary requirements, I believe they have a very good chance of joining the EuroLeague. Simply put, I see them as long-term partners of the EuroLeague.”
