They express their strong dissatisfaction with the absence of projects of vital importance to Limassol from the 2027 state budget and, in particular, the failure to allocate funds for projects to address the traffic problem, in a joint statement by the Mayors of Greater Limassol and the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EBEL), calling for an immediate review of the national budget, which has already been submitted to the House of Representatives.
The joint statement is signed by the mayors of Limassol, Amathus, Kourion, and Polemidia, as well as the President of the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EBEL).
“The traffic situation has reached a dead end. Thousands of our fellow citizens suffer daily on the roads, losing precious time away from work and their families. The impact on quality of life, economic activity, and business competitiveness is now severe,” the statement reads.
As noted, according to state budget data, out of a list of development projects totaling €1.5 billion, only three projects, worth €57 million, pertain to Limassol. “This represents a mere 3.8 percent, which does not meet the city’s current needs,” the statement notes.
At the same time, it is added that critical road projects—first and foremost the Northern Bypass and its necessary cross-connections—remain pending, despite repeated announcements and commitments. “We’ve been hearing about the Northern Bypass for three decades now. How much longer will Limassol have to wait?” they ask.
“Limassol is demanding what is only fair: equitable treatment, modern infrastructure, substantial investments, and the completion of projects that have been announced for years,” they state, adding that as municipalities and organized bodies in Limassol, they demand that the government immediately review the 2027 state budget, with substantial funding for development projects concerning Limassol.
They also call for specific and binding decisions regarding the Northern Bypass, Evagoras Lanitis Street, Synergatismos, Nikaia, Vythiki, Agios Athanasios, Andreas Papandreou, Ilias Kannaouros, Petrakis Gialouros, and the rest of the critical road network projects.
Furthermore, a clear timeline is requested for the planning, financing, bidding, and construction of the projects that have already been announced and agreed upon at the meeting held between the Municipality and the Ministry of Transportation on July 24,2026, as well as immediate action by the relevant ministries to resolve the outstanding issues and delays that are hindering the progress of these projects.
The mayors and the EVEL are also requesting a meeting with the President of the Republic and the relevant ministers to present a concrete plan for implementing the necessary infrastructure, with clear commitments and timelines.
“Limassol speaks with one voice. We are joining forces and are determined to exhaust every institutional means of advocacy until concrete decisions and results are achieved. In the coming days, a joint meeting will be held with the Limassol members of parliament to coordinate our further actions and take appropriate measures,” the statement notes.
