Tensions are rising ahead of the season’s first Clásico on Sunday, when Barcelona will host Real Madrid (10:00 p.m.). The president of the Catalan club, Joan Laporta, lashed out at the Madrid side, criticizing their transfer policy, in an interview with the French newspaper “L’Equipe.”
“I think they’ve gone down the wrong path and are paying the price. They’ve opened their wallets to pay for many very expensive players who aren’t delivering the expected results,” he emphasized.

“More than one rooster in the same coop—it can’t work, ever. The priority in soccer is the team and team spirit. If you don’t have that, the whole thing doesn’t work. That’s one of Barça’s strengths: having great talent, players from La Masia (the club’s academy), players from other soccer cultures, and managing to create a team with chemistry that works. Thanks to an exceptional coach (Hansi Flick) and a sports director (Deco), who are working to improve this team. They’ve focused on individual players and big-name signings. But they haven’t won anything in two years. We, on the other hand, are winning and are contenders to win it all.”
