Ecuador remains in shock following the death of Catholic priest Patricio Sánchez Molinari, who lost his life when a cross fell on his head during Mass.
According to local media, the tragic accident—which was broadcast live online—occurred after the priest had delivered a sermon on how fleeting life is.

Father Patricio Sánchez Molinari told the congregation that they should not waste their lives fiddling with their cell phones, but rather devote it to God and their loved ones.

“One day, all of us here will die as well, and sometimes the time we’ve devoted to various things isn’t as important as the time we spend with God. The quality time we devote to God, to our brothers and sisters, to our husbands, to our wives, to our children, and to our family is the time that matters most,” said Molinari.
Then, the priest asked God to bless the faithful and began another prayer, when the enormous cross behind him suddenly broke loose from the wall and fell on top of him.
Father Sánchez belonged to the Order of the Most Holy Redeemer, a Roman Catholic religious order founded in 1732 and active in 80 countries. He served under the Archdiocese of Guayaquil, and the cardinal and archbishop, Monsignor Luis Gerardo Cabrera Herrera, confirmed his death.
“We announce that our beloved Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, who served as pastor of the Church of Perpetual Help in the Central Vicariate, has departed for the Father’s House to enjoy His presence and glory,” the Church stated in a press release.
However, it remains unclear what caused the cross to detach and fall from the wall, and church authorities have not publicly provided an explanation for the incident.
