Burglars targeted the historic Venaria Reale Palace, on the outskirts of Turin, Italy, from which 26 valuable 18th-century pocket watches, with a total value of approximately 150,000 euros, were stolen. The perpetrators managed to remove the items despite heightened security measures, alarms, and the presence of armed guards.

The watches, of English and French manufacture, were crafted from gold and enamel and were kept in a special display case in the Duke of Savoy’s Audience Chamber.

This room is located on the main floor of the palace, along the route visitors take, immediately after the Grand Gallery, which was designed by the architect Filippo Juvarra. It is one of the most impressive halls in the Baroque complex, featuring elaborate stucco decorations, gilded elements, and murals.

According to reports, at least three people are believed to have been involved in the theft; they broke into the palace shortly after 2 a.m., with their faces covered.

Their actions are believed to have been captured by the complex’s security cameras. The footage is being examined by investigators, who are attempting to shed light on the perpetrators’ movements and determine how the break-in was carried out.

In a statement, the management body of the Royal Residences of Savoy clarified that all security systems were operational at the time of the theft.

Despite these security measures, the perpetrators managed to reach the room where the clocks were on display, break into the display case, and flee with the valuable items.

Authorities are investigating how the perpetrators gained access to the interior of the palace and whether they were familiar in advance with the layout of the premises and the operation of the security systems.

The historic collection, which had been donated in 2012

The 26 watches were part of a collection that had come into the possession of the management body of the Royal Residences of Savoy in 2012, following a donation by the heirs of Giorgio Accornero.

The collection also included 24 historic snuffboxes, which were not taken during the break-in.

According to the palace administration, the stolen items are covered by an insurance policy. However, beyond their financial value, the clocks are examples of 18th-century historical clockmaking and traditional craftsmanship, which were on display to the public as part of the complex’s cultural heritage.
