The Libyan House of Representatives’ decision to approve the Turkish-Libyan “Memorandum of Understanding” of 2019, characterizing it as illegal, null and void, and without merit.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that this “memorandum” violates the sovereign rights of third states and contravenes the recognized principles of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, as well as customary international law.

As noted, the violations concern, among other things, the rights of islands to maritime zones, including the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the continental shelf.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates the position of the Republic of Cyprus that the “memorandum” in question does not, in any way, produce legal effects vis-à-vis third states.
