The curse of division and introversion continues to plague EDEK. Eleven members of the party’s Political Bureau have addressed the President, citing unconstitutional behavior, threats, inaccuracies, and violations of internal party procedures. At the same time, they claim that she is not respecting the terms of the party’s bylaws, which could result in sanctions. She herself requested a postponement of the Political Bureau meeting, calling on them to state their positions at Sunday’s statutory convention.
The 11 responded with a new letter:
“Your response is a prime example of anti-constitutional behavior. Either it demonstrates a lack of knowledge of basic party and constitutional procedures, or it constitutes a veiled admission of contempt for internal party order and democracy. Furthermore, it exudes a threatening tone, which is unacceptable for competitiveness.”

Among other things, they are calling on her to inform them whether she intends to cooperate with AKEL in the presidential election. Among the 11 signatories are Achilleas Malachouridis and the party’s press secretary, Giorgos Georgiou, whom the EDEK president decided to relieve of their duties. Also among the signatories are Marios Hannides and individuals from the inner circle of Marinos Sizopoulos. Sophia Christodoulou responds, emphasizing that all procedures are being strictly followed.
“We will not return to the inward-looking mindset that led us where we are today. We are focusing on the major goals: the party constitution and the electoral convention for the future of EDEK.”
Sunday’s constitutional amendments focus, among other things, on contributions from party officials, the sale of real estate, and term limits. New sharp exchanges are expected on these issues.
Two figures from the old guard appear to be making a comeback following the lifting of their expulsions. They are Kostis Efstathiou and Dimitris Papadakis. However, their future roles remain unknown, as does whether they will run for any office.
