The Limassol Permanent Criminal Court sentenced a 28-year-old man to 10 years in prison today, Wednesday, who admitted to possessing large quantities of drugs with the intent to supply them to others. The defendant received a box from a courier company in Limassol containing nearly two kilograms of cocaine and approximately eight kilograms of cannabis.
Specifically, nearly two kilograms of cocaine and eight kilograms of cannabis were found in the box, which had been imported from Greece.
According to a statement from the Court and the facts presented before it, the case came to light following a tip received by the Cyprus Anti-Narcotics Agency (YKAN). Authorities determined that the box had been transported to a courier company’s warehouse in Limassol to be delivered to its recipient.
A controlled delivery operation followed. The 28-year-old arrived at the location, identified himself as the recipient of the package, and, as soon as he received it, was arrested in the act by CYN members who were on the premises.
Scientific tests conducted revealed, among other things, a particularly high concentration of cocaine.
As noted in the press release, the defendant acted as an intermediary/courier to facilitate the distribution of the drugs in question onto the market, following instructions from a third party and in exchange for financial gain. His collaboration with another person and his involvement in an organized drug trafficking operation made the offenses he committed particularly serious, while the defendant’s personal circumstances and family problemscould not serve as an excuse for his actions.
In determining the sentence, the large quantity and type of narcotic substances, as well as the high purity of the cocaine, were taken into account.
Mitigating factors included his admission of guilt, his personal and family circumstances, and his efforts toward rehabilitation. His previous conviction for offenses involving the possession of a Class B controlled substance and smoking cannabis, for which he had been fined, was also taken into account.
The prison sentences imposed are to be served concurrently, and the 28-year-old will serve a total sentence of 10 years. The case against his co-defendant was scheduled for a hearing at a later date.
