“You Haven’t Seen Anything Yet”: Groups of young people stage a mass scooter ride in Nicosia and provoke the police

Speeding, reckless driving, and now a mass protest on halloween

Groups of young people—most of whom are minors—are preparing to take to the streets of Nicosia en masse, engaging in street races, dangerous driving, and performing stunts with “modified” scooters, endangering both themselves and passing drivers, while at the same time causing a “headache” for the authorities.

In fact, they do not hesitate to “advertise” these actions on social media with various videos, just as they did with the mass protest they are organizing.

The group of young people is calling on other young scooter riders to join a large, mass protest on Halloween, October 31, Saturday, at 5:30 p.m., on Ledras Street. In this way, they are standing up to the police, saying things like “It’s not you who will stop us or destroy our dreams” and “You keep putting us in the news, but you still haven’t seen anything.”

It should be noted that the police are aware of this call to action.

Regarding the massive problem with scooters on Cypriot roads, Sotiris Ioannou, Chairman of the Transportation Committee and ELAM MP, as well as the former Chairman of the Transportation Committee, Alekos Tryfonides.

Alekos Tryfonides: “My
colleagues voted to tighten the legislation, and the penalty will be implemented within the next few days via a decree. None of this solves the problem. Because the drivers aren’t changing their behavior. We don’t have designated lanes in every municipality for scooters to travel on. After 10:00–11:00 p.m., these gatherings take place in every neighborhood, and they put on these stunts, doing wheelies and all that, with the great risks involved. That’s why I proposed a ban until the government puts the necessary infrastructure in place.”

Sotiris Ioannou: “It’s
a tragic situation. Obviously, there needs to be both policing and oversight. The legislation was tightened in April 2026 by the Parliament. On the roads we’re currently seeing in the videos, the use of so-called scooters is prohibited. It’s prohibited. These are roads with speed limits over 30 kilometers. Given their age, it is prohibited. So it is not a question of whether we will ban scooters altogether or not. What is needed is simply to enforce the law.”
