Approximately fifty basketball games across all divisions are under investigation by judicial authorities, following the filing of charges and the issuance of six arrest warrants against sports officials.
According to reports, the first evidence that came to the attention of the Sports Prosecutor was a complaint filed last April by the Amarousio Basketball Club. The complaint concerned the operations of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) and its president.
The prosecutor’s investigation was further bolstered by other complaints and witness testimonies. Two of the witnesses provided testimony deemed extremely important, as they offered details on how matches are fixed. Their knowledge is firsthand, as they appear to have admitted to having accepted money in the past for fixed matches. Their voluntary decision to cooperate with the prosecutor’s office exempted them from criminal liability, provided they disclosed everything they knew about illegal activities in the world of basketball.
The material from the prosecutor’s investigation includes messages and other evidence pointing to match-fixing in both the top division and other leagues, including even youth and high school leagues. The entire scheme spans from 2016 to 2026 and involves approximately 50 games, including one played abroad.
