As the Democratic Rally prepares to officially wrap up its campaign, with a nominated candidate, the president of DISY has not ruled out the possibility of supporting Nikos Christodoulides in the second round of the election should the party’s candidate fail. With this possibility looming, following Nikos Anastasiades’s statements, regarding a prior agreement with Christodoulides.
“I understand the concerns of the former President of the Republic and other officials who have expressed similar views. You know, I’m not going to shy away from this today; it is also our concern that left-wing ideologies and policies not come to power and that the Democratic Rally remain united.” Anita Dimitriou, President of DISY
When asked twice at the press conference on the state budget at the DISY offices whether she rejects the possibility of supporting Christodoulides in the second round, she replied:
“These are matters that will be decided in due course by the collective bodies and, specifically, by the party leadership. We’re not running in the election to lose. And while it’s certainly legitimate for various processes to take place among political parties, now is not the time—everything in due course.” Anita Dimitriou, DISY President
“Forgiveness comes after an apology,” states Giorgos Pamporidis as well.
“He should apologize to the Democratic Alarm supporters for the disappointment caused by his decision to turn his back on the official party on the 23rd and seek to restore that relationship.” George Pamporidis, DISY Member of Parliament
Assurances
The party president makes it clear that she has received assurances from both Giorgos Pamboridis and Averof Neophytou that they will support the winner following the internal party process.
“I have spoken with both candidates, and they have committed to supporting one another. This is a prerequisite.” Anita Dimitriou, DISY Chairwoman
Sanctions and… Principles
She distinguishes the party’s position from that of Averof Neophytou regarding the proposal to lift energy sanctions against Russia, sending a clear message about the future candidate’s proposals.
The Democratic Alarm is a party of principles, and its positions do not change; accordingly, the positions of its candidate will be shaped in the same way, stated Anita Dimitriou.
She noted that achieving unity requires time and a collective effort.
