“Professor, the issues in the region are now so intertwined and so complex, and the Palestinian President plans to visit Southern Cyprus at the end of the month. At this point, as I said, our understanding differs from the Palestinian President’s perspective. We’re saying this here.” CNN Turk
Turkish media have begun launching attacks against Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, as they view his visit to the Republic of Cyprus as an act of ingratitude.
A visit which, as Alpha revealed, is scheduled to take place, barring any unforeseen circumstances, on October 29.
Turkish media outlets believe that this, too, is part of an Israeli plan to free the Republic of Cyprus from accusations that it is turning into… a stronghold of Tel Aviv.
“If they are trying to create a new provocation through the Palestinian Authority, or a new diplomatic headquarters against Turkey, because they feel that France, England, the United States, Greece, and India are on their side, they will fail.” CNN Turk
“The Palestinian President is traveling to Southern Cyprus at the end of the month.” Kibris Postasi
They will discuss bilateral relations, the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and developments in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
The visit had been announced a few days earlier, in an interview with Fileleftheros, the Palestinian ambassador to Cyprus, Abdullah Atari, though he was unable to announce specific dates at the time.
Atari had spoken of the historical ties between the two sides and a shared vision for justice and freedom.
Response to Criticism
Abbas’s visit, in addition to the messages it sends to the international community, also seeks to address the fierce criticism the government has been facing from political forces in Cyprus, such as AKEL.
Criticism has also been directed at political parties such as DISY, DIKO, and ELAM following the formation of a parliamentary group in collaboration with the Friends of Israel Organization, and which, according to Ezekia Papaioannou, undermines Cyprus’s credibility in its efforts to exert international pressure on Turkey.
