One of the approximately 52 games under investigation as part of the scandal rocking Greek basketball took place in Paphos last March, during the Final Four of the Panhellenic School Basketball Championship.
As reported by Alpha Cyprus correspondent Kostas Nanos on the program “Alpha News,” it was the semifinal between a team from Patras and a team from Thessaloniki. The Patras team included players from Prometheus, a club reportedly linked to the interests of Vangelis Liolios, president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation. According to the same sources, his son was also present at the arena.
This particular game is at the center of the investigation, with the conditions under which it was played and the decisions made during the game being examined by the relevant authorities. According to reports, the Patras team took a total of 52 free throws, with a significant number of them occurring in the final stages of the game.
The motivation for the student-athletes was significant, as qualifying through the Final Four and securing a spot in the World School Games could provide them with additional points toward admission to Greek universities, without requiring them to take the national college entrance exams, subject to the specified conditions.
