The “Justice for Shoaib Khan” Initiative has warned that the judicial investigation into the case of 24-year-old Shoaib Khan from Pakistan—who was found dead on January 6, 2025, in an open area in Strovolos—should be suspendedthe “Justice for Shoaib Khan” Initiative, which states that this could lead to further delays lasting many years.

In a statement, the initiative reports that on Wednesday, September 16, it sent a monitoring team to the Nicosia District Court, where a hearing was scheduled, which was expected to be the first examination of witnesses as part of the judicial inquiry. The team was informed that the hearing had been postponed, the statement adds.

It is reported that at the next hearing, scheduled for November 10, the Attorney General will inform the court whether he will request a stay of the inquiry until the criminal proceedings against the two drivers involved in the incident are completed.

“It is unclear to the attorneys representing Shoaib Khan’s family why the two cases are linked. Both drivers have been in pretrial detention for over 18 months, while criminal proceedings against them have not yet begun. Suspending the judicial investigation could lead to further delays lasting many years, affect the ability to hear the drivers’ testimony and/or the ability of other witnesses to testify, as well as hinder any subsequent investigation or proceedings concerning the police officers involved,” the statement adds.

The Initiative calls for the judicial investigation not to be suspended pending the conclusion of the criminal proceedings against the two drivers, and for both proceedings to continue in parallel. Among other things, it calls for all relevant witnesses and evidence to be properly examined without further unnecessary delay and for the conduct and potential liability of the police officers involvedpolice officers involved.

“After delays exceeding 18 months, Shoaib’s family is entitled to an immediate, thorough, and effective investigation into his death,” it adds, while quoting a message from Shoaib Khan’s family, in which they demand justice and call on the authorities to expedite the process. Thirteen NGOs have co-signed the family’s appeal.
