Heat-Pistons: Giannis scores another 36, but defense “hits” Miami hard early on

Second consecutive loss
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Giannis Antetokounmpo picked up right where he left off in the season opener, but the Heat were unable to turn things around at the start of the season. The Pistons won 128-111, leaving Miami at 0-2 and once again struggling with serious defensive issues.

The Greek superstar was once again the Heat’s top performer, finishing the game with 36 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block in 33 minutes of play. He shot 15-for-26 from the field, 1-for-3 from three-point range, and 5-for-8 from the free-throw line, while six of his 12 rebounds were offensive. He also committed three turnovers. Davion Mitchell added 18 points and Bobby Portis Jr. scored 11 off the bench, but the rest of the starting five failed to provide comparable support. Bam Adebayo was limited to four points, while Klay Thompson had six on 2-for-11 shooting.

Detroit started the game with an impressive 17-2 run and never relinquished the lead. John Collins scored 23 points, Paul Reed added 19 off the bench, and former Heat player Duncan Robinson had 17, with Cade Cunningham finishing the game with 16.

The biggest red flag for Miami is its defense. The Heat have allowed 259 points in their first two games—the worst such performance in franchise history to start a season—and have a net rating of -42. This is only the eighth time in the team’s 39-year history that it has started a season 0-2, despite the fact that Antetokounmpo has already put together two consecutive standout performances.
