Three key priorities emerged from yesterday’s meetings held by the President of the Democratic Rally, Ms. Annita Dimitriou, in Athens with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Ministers Giorgos Gerapetritis, Stavros Papastavrou, and Tasos Hatzivassiliou.
According to a party statement, the first topic of discussion concerned the Cyprus issue and Euro-Turkish relations. Specifically, “the need for close coordination between Cyprus and Greece in the face of Turkish intransigence and the utilization of European tools to promote common interests.” Ms. Dimitriou emphasized that the upgrading of Turkey–European Union relations, including participation in the SAFE program, must be linked to specific commitments and tangible progress on the Cyprus issue and respect for international law.”

The second pillar was the electricity interconnection (GSI) and energy security. Specifically, “the strategic importance of the Cyprus–Greece electricity interconnection (GSI) and the need to advance the project, with the aim of ending Cyprus’s energy isolation. The discussions also highlighted the importance of strengthening renewable energy sources, storage infrastructure, and leveraging Greek experience and expertise.”

The third area of discussion concerned the Turkey-Libya memorandum and the “need to intensify efforts to have it condemned at the international and European levels.” As Ms. Dimitriou stated following her meeting with the Greek Prime Minister, “it was agreed to make more intensive efforts in this direction, including through the European People’s Party. The unanimous resolution of the House of Representatives and the Speaker of the House’s initiative to brief her counterparts are part of this same framework.”
A common conclusion drawn from these meetings, DISY notes, “is the importance of a common strategy and ongoing coordination between Cyprus and Greece, of close and continuous cooperation between Democratic Rally and New Democracy, the utilization of European opportunities, and the strengthening of regional cooperation, with the aim of more effectively defending the common interests of the two countries.”
