Ilias Papatheodorou commented on the latest developments in Greek basketball during the press conference following the game between Amarousio and Peristeri.
The Greek coach described the developments of the past few days as necessary, using the phrase “to clean up Greek basketball,” while also emphasizing that the justice system must complete its work so that a clear picture of the case can emerge.
At the same time, he expressed his sadness over the situation faced by people who have served the sport for many years, noting that the process needs to be completed before he can form a full opinion on what has happened.
Here are the main points of what he said: “I don’t want to comment on these developments at this time. It’s a very unfortunate situation that saddens us all. On the other hand, it was necessary for this to happen to clean up Greek basketball. However, we must let the justice system do its job.
We, as a team, did what we had to do. Beyond that, I believe we must let the justice system seriously examine the case—as it is doing—and wait for the process to be completed.
I truly hope we’ll see a different day for Greek basketball. The conditions are there, there are investors, and there’s interest from the public. What people want is to see games like today’s—fair games, decided on the court based on the players’ skills.
I hope the process is completed so that from now on we can focus on how we’ll play on the court.
On a personal level, I am deeply saddened to see people who have served basketball for so many years find themselves in this position today. It’s something that troubles me and saddens me greatly. However, the process must be completed so that we have a clear picture and so that I, too, can better understand what has happened and form my opinion based on all the facts.
Right now, though, my mind is entirely on my team. We want to secure our first win and move forward with greater optimism and confidence in the coming days. That’s what’s on our minds, and that’s what we want to focus on.”
