Just as was the case with Petros Papapetrou on Friday night, so too with Vangelis Liolios and Giorgos Mavragani, the decision made by the investigating judge and the prosecutor following the two men’s testimony on Sunday was to remand them in custody in connection with the Greek basketball match-fixing scandal.

The entire process lasted more than 12 hours. The former president of the Federation, Vangelis Liolios, gave his defense for 3.5 hours, having resigned from his position at the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) shortly before arriving at the Evelpidon Court on Sunday morning.

Liolios faces charges of involvement in a match-fixing scandal. During his defense, he submitted a supplementary written statement, presented tax returns and other supporting documents from the past decade, and denied all charges, claiming the case was a setup.

His associate, Giorgos Mavraghanis, was also remanded in custody; his defense statement lasted about 40 minutes.

Next, on Monday, the statements of the last three arrested individuals will follow: international referee Vasso Tsaroucha, KED member Tasos Piloidis, and special refereeing advisor Ilias Koromilas.

At the same time, the Independent Authority for Combating Proceeds from Illegal Activities is thoroughly examining the assets and “source of wealth” declarations of those involved in the case of rigged basketball games. The relevant order was issued by its president, Honorary Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Charalambos Vourliotis.

The investigation is not limited to the six defendants named in the case file but also extends to other figures in the sport.
