The Parliamentary Employees’ Sectoral Council is calling for the immediate intervention of House Speaker Annita Dimitriou, denouncing the disparaging, belittling, and negative behavior by members of Parliament both within the Parliament and in public discourse, through statements in the media and posts on social media.

In a letter dated October 27, 2026, signed by the President of the Sectoral Council, Stavros Konstantinidis, refers to behaviors that disparage employees, devalue their work, and collectively attribute blame and negative characterizations to them.

Expressing strong dissatisfaction and concern, the House staff highlights the role it plays daily in ensuring the smooth operation of the House by providing administrative, scientific, and organizational support to members of Parliament, their parliamentary staff, and parliamentary bodies. It further emphasizes that the performance of its duties requires a work environment characterized by mutual respect, dignity, and recognition of each employee’s professional contributions.

As noted in the letter, such behavior not only undermines the professional and personal dignity of employees, but also create a climate of disappointment and insecurity, undermining the cooperative relationship between members of parliament and staff.

They do not dispute the right to criticism

The Sectoral Council makes it clear that it does not dispute the right of members of Parliament to offer criticism, ask questions, and seek explanations on matters concerning the functioning of Parliament.

It emphasizes, however, that institutional or professional disagreement is one thing, while the personal disparagement of employees is quite another. As emphasized, the public expression of disagreements cannot serve as a means of targeting staff, nor can it lead to the attribution of exclusive blame or the devaluation of their professional standing.

Through the letter, the employees essentially call for ensuring a climate of institutional decorum and mutual respect, both in day-to-day professional interactions and in the public statements made by members of Parliament.

In conclusion, they express the hope that the necessary measures will be taken to prevent such behavior from recurring, noting that the smooth functioning of Parliament requires relationships of trust and cooperation between Members of Parliament and the people who support their parliamentary work on a daily basis.
