From beach and seabed cleanups to educating thousands of children and harnessing green energy, Lidl Cyprus continues to turn sustainability into a daily commitment through a consistent 5+1 action plan.

To mark World Environment Day, Lidl Cyprus is relaunching the campaign “The bigger you are, the greater your responsibility,” reminding us of something simple yet essential: protecting the environment isn’t a promise made just once a year. It’s a daily commitment. A series of decisions, collaborations, and actions that require consistency, perseverance, and real impact.

The campaign film, through images of Cypriot nature, the volunteer efforts of Lidl’s employees, and the reflective words from “Asceticism” by Nikos Kazantzakis, speaks precisely to this responsibility—a responsibility that goes beyond words and is transformed into action.

And at Lidl Cyprus, this action is now yielding measurable results.

1. Responsibility begins at sea

Since 2021, Lidl Cyprus has been working consistently with the AKTI Center for Studies and Research through the Project Zero initiative, supporting actions to protect the marine environment.

As of February 2026, 17.8 metric tons of waste have been collected through 88 beach cleanups and 18 seabed cleanups. Behind these numbers are people, teams, students, teachers, divers, and volunteers who have joined forces to create cleaner seas.

2. Responsibility is learned from a young age

Environmental change begins with knowledge. That is why Lidl Cyprus supports the mind REset Environmental Education Program, organized by Junior Achievement Cyprus.

The program is celebrating five years of success, having educated nearly 16,500 students across Cyprus on the principles of the circular economy.

In this year’s cycle, more than 3,600 students from 24 schools worked on the topic of food waste, developing ideas that combine innovation, entrepreneurship, and environmental responsibility.

3. Responsibility Requires Participation

No change happens on its own. As part of Project Zero, a total of 5,240 volunteers, students, teachers, and divers participated in cleanup and environmental awareness activities.

This participation shows that protecting the environment is not the responsibility of just a few, but a collective effort that grows as more people decide to be a part of it.

4. Responsibility Starts with Education

The initiative doesn’t stop at cleanup events. By February 2026, 347 school visits had been conducted, through which 55,600 children across Cyprus were introduced to issues of environmental protection and sustainability.

Because the next generation doesn’t just need to hear about the environment. They need to understand it, love it, and feel that they can contribute to its protection.

5. Responsibility is also reflected in how we operate

For Lidl Cyprus, sustainability isn’t limited to social and educational initiatives. It also extends to the very way the company operates on a daily basis.

Since 2022, the company has been using 100% green electricity at its facilities, with the exception of supply contracts over which it has no control. At the same time, it continues to expand its solar power systems, currently operating a total of 8 solar installations at its stores and central warehouse.

World Environment Day is an occasion. Not the beginning, and certainly not the end. For Lidl Cyprus, protecting the environment is an ongoing journey that requires consistency, collaboration, and lasting action.

Because as a company’s presence grows, so does its responsibility. And as that responsibility grows, it becomes all the more important to turn it into action.
