Charalambos Taiganidis, a living legend of the Paralympics, battled fiercely in the waters off Cyprus, facing adverse weather conditions and winds of up to 7 Beaufort, to prove that willpower and perseverance can overcome any limit when the effort is made for a noble cause. Unfortunately, the attempt was halted for safety reasons regarding the Greek Paralympian, who is visually impaired, and the crews on the boats accompanying him.

The XM Group sponsored Taiganidis’s attempt to break the world record for the longest continuous, unassisted open-water swim without a wetsuit, external support, or contact with escort vessels. Covering 151 kilometers from Coral Bay in Paphos to Oroklini in Larnaca with “200,000 strokes,” Taiganidis aimed to raise funds for the Pan-Cyprian Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (PASYKAF), which has been offering its services to patients and their families for 40 years.

Taiganidis’s effort began at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16, under the supervision of the World Open Water Swimming Federation and with the support of the Cyprus Association of Reserve Frogmen, which handled operational coordination and guided the athlete in the water. The entire mission was carried out under the auspices of the Ministry of Justice and Public Order of the Republic of Cyprus and the Hellenic Paralympic Committee.

For two days, the Greek Paralympian battled the wind and waves, and he did not want to stop his attempt, until it was deemed necessary for safety reasons, and the teams accompanying him convinced him that he had to stop. The athlete was taken to a hospital for tests and rehabilitation. He expressed his disappointment at not completing the attempt, but stated that he would repeat the endeavor and set a new world record next time.

The XM Group proudly supported Charalambos Taiganidis’s effort as part of its long-standing commitment to supporting initiatives that promote perseverance, resilience, and pushing boundaries. Taiganidis, one of the most prominent swimmers in the Greek Paralympic Movement, has won a total of 4 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze medals at the Paralympic Games in Athens (2004), Beijing (2008), and London (2012), as well as many other international accolades.

The Director of Events and Corporate Social Responsibility for the XM Group, Konstantina Stylianou, congratulated Charalambos Taiganidis on the perseverance, strength of character, and dedication he demonstrated for such an important cause. Ms. Stylianou stated that it is an honor for the XM Group to support an athlete who has dedicated his life to reaching new heights, and who serves as a source of inspiration for the strength, discipline, perseverance, and integrity that set him apart—values that the XM Group steadfastly upholds.
