“Thalpo” – the Cyprus Network for the Empowerment of Informal Caregivers – announces its official registration and operation as a nonprofit association in the Republic of Cyprus, marking an important step toward the recognition and support of the thousands of people who provide informal care every day to those in need.

Informal care refers to the unpaid care and support provided by family members, friends, or other close associates to older adults, people with disabilities, people with chronic conditions, or those with other support needs. This is a contribution of inestimable social value, which often remains unseen, even though it is a fundamental pillar of any health and social care system.

Shortly after its official registration in the Republic of Cyprus, “Thalpo” achieved a significant European distinction by becoming a full member of Eurocarers, the European network representing informal caregivers and their organizations across Europe. Eurocarers serves as the collective voice of informal and family caregivers at the European level and collaborates with European Union institutions, national governments, research institutions, and civil society organizations to promote policies that recognize, support, and empower caregivers. At the same time, it points out that the overwhelming majority of long-term care in Europe is provided by informal or family caregivers.

The inclusion of “Thalpo” into Eurocarers is a particularly significant development for Cyprus, as it establishes a direct link between the country and the European movement for informal caregivers and broadens access to expertise, research, best practices, and international collaborations.

In this context, “Thalpo” was established with the following objectives:

  • To recognize and highlight the role of informal caregivers in Cyprus.
  • To provide information, support, and empowerment.
  • To develop educational initiatives and support groups.
  • To collaborate with national and European organizations.
  • To contribute to the formulation of evidence-based policies on informal care.

“The official registration of ‘Thalpo’ and our membership in Eurocarers are two important milestones for the growth of the informal caregivers’ movement in Cyprus. Thousands of people across the country care for parents, children, spouses, and other loved ones every day, often without recognizing themselves as caregivers. Our goal is to give them a voice, support, information, and the assurance that they are not alone. Through our collaboration with Eurocarers, we are bringing European experience and best practices to Cyprus to help shape a society that truly recognizes and supports caregivers,” said the President of “Thalpo,” Mr. Marios Kantarides.

With this philosophy in mind, “Thalpo” extends an open invitation to all those who care for a family member or loved one on a daily basis to contact the Network and become part of a new community of mutualsupport, information, and empowerment.

If you are caring for someone, you are not alone. There is “Thalpo.”
