Nursing staff at Larnaca General Hospital are staging a one-hour spontaneous work stoppage today, according to an announcement by PASYDY.
The work stoppage is taking place from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. as a protest against the hospital’s long-standing problems.
“The main cause is the overcrowding observed in recent days, resulting in patients remaining for hours in the Accident and Emergency Department (A&E) for hours until a bed becomes available for their admission,” the statement reads.
Although hospital management unilaterally opened five additional beds, which are staffed on an overtime basis, this measure has not resolved the problem, the statement adds.
“The nursing staff is now on the verge of professional burnout. Nurses are called upon daily to meet patient needs through continuous overtime work, putting at risk both their own physical and mental health and the safety of patients.”
The nurses of PASYDY call on the management of OKYPY to provide substantive and permanent solutions to the chronic problems at Larnaca Hospital, rather than resorting to temporary measures that merely mask the problem.
