Savvas Papasavvas, President of the General Court of the European Union, was elected by his colleagues to serve for the remainder of the presidential term, namely for the period from September 16, 2026, to August 31, 2028, following the early termination of Marc van der Woude’s term.
Born in 1969 in Nicosia, Savvas S. Papasavvas studied at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where he received a law degree in 1991. He pursued graduate studies at the Université de Paris II in France and received, in 1992, a master’s degree (D.E.A.) in public law. In 1995, after completing his doctoral studies at the Université d’Aix-Marseille III in France, he was awarded a Ph.D. in law.
Admitted to the Cyprus Bar Association and a member of the Nicosia Bar Association since 1993, S. Papasavvas continued his career as a lawyer until his appointment to the General Court in 2004.
He also taught at the University of Cyprus as a lecturer from 1997 to 2002, after which he was elected lecturer in constitutional law and taught in that capacity from 2002 to 2004.
S. Papasavvas was appointed a judge of the General Court on May 12, 2004, and was elected division president for two consecutive terms, from September 15, 2010, to September 25, 2016. His colleagues elected him Vice President of the General Court on September 27, 2019, and he served in that capacity until today, when he was elected President.
