The new Central Prison will be built in the Agios Sozomenos area, in the Nicosia District, according to a decision made at today’s meeting at the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, which was attended by the Ministry’s political head, Kostas Fytiris, and representatives of the relevant agencies. As noted in a Ministry press release, the site was selected based on cost and time considerations, while efforts to plan and finance the project are proceeding in parallel.
During the meeting, the progress of the procedures was reviewed, and the next steps for implementing the project were determined, “the design of which is now moving forward with a site selection in the Agios Sozomenos area.”
The announcement notes that it is particularly important that “the process of selecting the most suitable site is proceeding in parallel with all other necessary processes for the design, development, and financing of the project.”
“Therefore, the evaluation and final selection of the site do not delay the project’s preparation,” clarifies the Ministry of Justice.
As the Ministry explains, the selection of the state-owned plot in Agios Sozomenos “was made following an evaluation of technical and financial data, with the key criteria being the total cost and the time required to build the necessary supporting infrastructure.”
The announcement states that the Mathiatis area was the initial choice; however, following further technical review, “it was determined that developing the project at that specific site would require significant additional infrastructure, including a new road network, sewer and water supply systems, as well as the necessary electrical infrastructure. These requirements entail additional costs as well as a longer completion time.”
In contrast, as noted, “the state-owned plot in Agios Sozomenos offers significant advantages, as basic infrastructure for roads, sewer systems, water supply, and electricity infrastructure. This reduces both the cost and the time required for the project’s development and implementation.”
“The government’s goal is to create a modern correctional complex in the most cost-effective, fastest, and most functional manner, without compromising on safety, functionality, or modern correctional facility standards,” concludes the statement from the Ministry of Justice and Public Order.
