A 38-year-old man lit a lighter on the fuel pump and ended up with burns and handcuffs; he was apprehended at the airport

He went to light a cigarette while his friend was filling up with gas

Police are investigating a case of negligent and reckless conduct in connection with the injury of two individuals, aged 32 and 38, by a fire that broke out while they were refueling their car at a gas station in the Larnaca district on the evening of August 28, 2026. As part of the investigation into the case, the 38-year-old was arrested, and the Kofinou Regional Police Station is continuing its investigation.

Specifically, at around 11:45 p.m. on August 28, 2026, the 32-year-old and the 38-year-old drove in the 32-year-old’s car to a gas station in the Larnaca district to refuel their vehicle. While refueling, while the 38-year-old was standing near the fuel pump, according to evidence currently under investigation, he lit a lighter, causing a flash and a fire to break out.

Neighbors extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher; the fire caused damage to the 32-year-old’s car and the fuel dispenser.

Members of the Police and the Fire Department arrived at the scene to investigate, as well as an ambulance crew, who transported the 32-year-old and 38-year-old to Larnaca General Hospital.

Medical examinations revealed that the 32-year-old had a superficial burn on his left arm; after receiving treatment, he was discharged. The 38-year-old suffered second- and third-degree burns on his legs and right arm and was transferred to Nicosia General Hospital for hospitalization. However, yesterday morning, August 29, 2026, at his own request, the 38-year-old was discharged.

Later yesterday, around 3:30 p.m., the 38-year-old went to Larnaca Airport with the intention of departing for the country where he permanently resides. At the airport, police officers arrested him pursuant to a warrant issued for the purpose of investigating the case.

Following his arrest, due to the severity of his injuries, the 38-year-old was transported to Nicosia General Hospital, where he was admitted to the Burn Unit for treatment. His condition is no longer life-threatening.
