Secondary school students will go on a walkout on Wednesday over a series of issues that remain at the center of attention. Among these are the installation of air conditioning in classrooms, school uniforms, and the curriculum, with students demanding solutions to the problems they face.
Speaking on the “Alpha Kalimera” program, PSEM Secretary Despoina Kyprianou addressed the demands that led the students to boycott classes.
As Ms. Kyprianou notes, the primary concern for students is the installation of air conditioners in classrooms. Specifically, she states that although the original timeline called for the air conditioners to be operational by 2027, their activation was delayed by one year. “Classes cannot be effective when neither the teacher nor the students can concentrate because of the heat,” he says.

Regarding the second issue, the PSEM Secretary addressed the topic of school uniforms. More specifically, she stated that many school administrations do not allow students to wear short pants, citing appearance as the reason. Regarding this issue, she noted, the PSEM sent a letter to the Ministry but has not yet received a response.
Regarding the third issue of concern to students, Ms. Kyprianou referred to the curriculum. More specifically, she stated that in certain courses, the curriculum was not only not reduced but actually increased. She added that, in any courses where the curriculum was reduced, “the reductions were not substantial. It’s the same.”

When asked to explain why the walkout will take place only during the fourth period, the PSEM secretary stated that this specific time coincides with the time the House Education Committee is scheduled to meet.
