The Argyroupolis Avenue in Strovolos has been renamed “Dimitris Christofias Avenue.” The avenue, which opened to traffic on June 4, connects the GSP area with Tseriou Avenue.
Speaking on the Alpha News program, Antonis Oikonomides, Head of the Local Government Directorate, was asked who decides on the naming of streets and avenues; Mr. Oikonomides replied that it is exclusively the authority of the Municipal Council, without requiring any approval from the Ministry of the Interior.
“This is not the first time; municipal councils have decided to rename certain streets, specifically by naming them after a former President of the Republic. This has happened not only in Strovolos but also in other areas. You realize that sometimes there are minor objections depending on which avenue or street is being renamed or whose name is being given to it, but this is a matter that falls preeminently the City Council.”
When asked whether the current City Council can proceed with renaming without any specific provision, he appears certain that the name of this particular avenue will not be changed again.
He also notes that avenue renamings are very limited in scope and points out that in recent years, avenues have been renamed in Larnaca, Paphos, and Geri.
It is noted that the renaming ceremony for this avenue is scheduled to take place on the afternoon of Monday, June 29.
