We may be in the middle of July, but today’s weather felt more like fall. Due to the unstable weather conditions prevailing in our region, the skies opened up in a summery fashion in several areas of the island, bringing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
Heavy rains began to hit the island early in the afternoon, mainly in the mountainous and inland areas, prompting the meteorological service to issue a yellow warning for severe thunderstorms.
“There were several instances of rain and thunderstorms in various parts of the island, particularly in mountainous and inland areas—particularly Kokkinotrimithia, as well as the mountainous regions of Pedoula and Kalopanagiotis, where we had significant rainfall.”
Andreas Chrysanthou – Meteorological Officer
Heavy rainfall was also recorded in Agia Marina Xyliatou and in Kalopanagiotis.
The images of today’s weather conditions in the mountains speak for themselves.
The midday thunderstorms swelled the Klario River, causing the water to flow rapidly.
These conditions may seem unusual for this time of year, but the rains are considered extremely beneficial during this period as they help prevent wildfires.
“These conditions are very favorable, as I’ve said; soil moisture is increasing, which is a very important factor in the outbreak and spread of wildfires—something very positive for us.”
Andreas Chrysanthou
These conditions will persist tomorrow as well, with the mountainous and inland regions expected to be affected once again. The instability is expected to subside and disappear completely by Friday.
