The Court of Appeals has granted the appeal filed by the Attorney General of the Republic against the prison sentence imposed on a defendant in a case of sexual abuse of a minor, increasing the term from seven to ten years.

According to a statement from the Legal Service, the Court of Appeals increased the seven-year, concurrent prison sentence originally imposed on the defendant at first instance for each of the 48 counts on which he was found guilty, all relating to a case of sexual abuse of a minor. The Court of Appeals’ decision, issued on June 30, 2026, was rendered following an appeal filed by the Attorney General of the Republic on the grounds that the sentence imposed was manifestly inadequate, based on the seriousness of the offenses and the repeated acts in question, the prescribed penalty, case law, and the need for general prevention and deterrence.

The case was heard in a closed-door proceeding due to the victim’s age.

In addition to the above concurrent prison sentences, the Court of Appeals upheld the order issued by the trial court, which prohibits the defendant from:

1. From being employed or working in places where children are present or frequent.

2. Residing in a location adjacent to organized facilities where children reside or frequent.

Furthermore, he was referred to the Supervisory Authority for the entire duration of his detention at the Central Prison, as well as for a period of five years following his release.

On behalf of the Attorney General of the Republic, the case was handled by Ms. Xenia Xenophontos, Senior Public Prosecutor.
