The European Union is attempting to establish
rules for artificial intelligence, moving from declarations to action. As early as the beginning of August, the European Union implemented the rules passed two years ago that regulate artificial intelligence.
The new legislation aims to ensure the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence systems. Providers and operators of artificial intelligence technologies are now subject to rules governing the authorization of artificial intelligence systems in the EU single market.
The new regulation addresses risks such as bias, discrimination, and accountability gaps, while promoting innovation and encouraging the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence.
Prohibitions
Among other things, the legislation prohibits specific practices such as manipulating people through artificial intelligence to covertly influence their decisions or behavior, “scoring” citizens based on their behavior or personal characteristics; the use of AI to infer or predict sensitive personal information; certain uses of facial recognition in public spaces, as well as AI-generated material that creates nude or sexual content without the individual’s consent.
In practice, the new legislation provides European citizens with greater security; though the impact may be felt in the speed with which new artificial intelligence technologies reach Europe.
The European Union has taken the global lead in enacting legislation on artificial intelligence. Its rules can serve as a global standard for regulating artificial intelligence, with the aim of ensuring the safety, ethical conduct, and the reliability of artificial intelligence systems
