The Cabinet approved increases in social benefit allowances and 290 new positions for school aides and attendants for children with disabilities this week, President Nikos Christodoulides announced on Saturday.
In a post on X, President Christodoulides stated that this week the Cabinet made “two important decisions of particular social significance that substantially improve the daily lives of our fellow citizens.”
First, he notes, 290 new positions for school aides and attendants for children with disabilities, bringing the total number to 1,875, and second, “a substantial increase in five social benefits aimed at achieving the goal of independent living for our fellow citizens with disabilities.”
Specifically, the President notes a 50% increase in the subsidy for purchasing a car, a 33% increase in the transportation allowance, a 10% increase in the personal assistance and in-home care allowance, a doubling of the allowance for participation in Day Centers, and the inclusion of nearly 5,000 new beneficiaries by 2028.
“Undoubtedly, these are social policy decisions with substantive content,” says President Christodoulides. He notes that these are decisions “that we can make and implement thanks to our responsible economic policy, which allows us to invest in areas that improve citizens’ daily lives, but also to return the benefits of growth to society.” These decisions, he continued, are building a Cyprus that supports, that includes, that leaves no one behind—a Cyprus that is changing.
