An antiquities smuggler was caught red-handed yesterday, Monday, in the Kouklia area. Specifically, around 6:30 p.m., the police received a tip that an individual was in possession of a metal detector and a pickaxe and was working near an archaeological site in the Kouklia area.
Officers from the local police station went to the area, where they found a 41-year-old Greek Cypriot from the Paphos district in possession of the aforementioned items. At the same time, excavations were discovered at the same site.
The Paphos Criminal Investigation Department took over the investigation, while the suspect was arrested under a court warrant for the offenses of illegal excavation for the purpose of discovering antiquities and possession of a metal detector without a permit; he is scheduled to be charged today incourt.
