Mapping of medical centers has begun; “it won’t be long before it yields results”

The PIS is moving forward with guidelines for its members
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The process has begun to implement the directives issued a few days ago by the Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambides, a few days ago to map medical centers in Cyprus where high-risk invasive procedures are performed, according to CNA.

According to sources at the Ministry of Health, the method for conducting the mapping and the officials responsible for this process will be determined during internal meetings being held at the Ministry. It is estimated, moreover, that this process will yield results in due course. The same sources also reported that, wherever and whenever deemed necessary, the Ministry is in communication and coordination with the Cyprus Medical Association (CMA).

It should be noted that, according to the law, the authority to inspect private hospitals lies with the Inspector of Private Hospitals at the Ministry of Health, while the PIS issues licenses to practice medicine to doctors in Cyprus, based on documents issued by the Medical Council of the Ministry of Health, after reviewing the credentials submitted by each physician who wishes to practice in Cyprus.

The Cyprus Medical Association (PIS) is taking action by issuing notices to its members

Meanwhile, the PIS is taking action by sending notices to its members to help identify and locate individuals practicing medicine without a license, as well as to identify and report unethical practices.

In accordance with current legislation, within the scope of its responsibilities, the PIS refers cases to the relevant government agencies, as well as to the police, regarding cases it identifies that require investigation.

As reported to CNA, the PIS will await an update from the Ministry should issues arise that fall within its jurisdiction, as part of the process of mapping medical centers that perform high-risk invasive procedures, in order to initiate the appropriate procedures.

According to the same information, following its relatively recent administrative restructuring, the PIS is pursuing a more organized approach to implementing the decisions of its Council, by implementing measures aimed at addressing individual cases that occasionally tarnish the image of the medical profession in Cyprus.

It should be noted that in 2025, the Cyprus Medical Association (PIS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, also conducted an awareness campaign regarding cosmetic medical procedures by professionals who do not hold a medical degree or a license to practice medicine.

In this context, the PIS also calls on the public to submit formal and specific complaints regarding such cases so that cases can be documented, as, according to information from KYPE, there have been numerous instances that were referred to the relevant disciplinary bodies of the PIS but were ultimately dismissed, as the necessary evidence was lacking.

Furthermore, as CNA has been informed, the PIS Council is expected to examine, at its regular meeting on October 8, legal issues pertaining to the handling of such cases, institutional and procedural issues concerning coordination with agencies and organizations for investigative purposes, as well as planning measures to protect patients.
