Konstantinos Konstantinou was elected the new president of OELMEK. The organization is focusing on the new evaluation system as well as the appointment system. A meeting with the Minister of Education will take place on Friday to discuss, among other things, the issue of the new appointment system.
Speaking on the program “Alpha News,” OELMEK President Konstantinos Konstantinou stated that the two main issues of concern to the Organization are the new evaluation system and the appointment system.
Regarding the evaluation system, he stated that the organization is calling for substantive changes along two main lines. The first area concerns the improvement of public schools, and the second area concerns changes that will create a transparent and equitable system.
Regarding changes to the appointment system, Mr. Konstantinou explained that, currently, there is legislation that was passed a decade ago and stipulated that the lists of candidates for appointment would be abolished in August 2027. He emphasized that if this legislation is not amended, there will be major gaps in education, adding that the Ministry of Education recognizes the problem.
“If no one amends this specific legislation, by September 2027 we will have no teachers in our schools.”
He noted, by way of example, that if 400 language teachers are needed in secondary education—to be appointed as temporary or permanent contract employees— at present, not even the 50% required by law from the roster is sufficient to meet that specific number
Mr. Konstantinou stated that the role of a teacher is multifaceted, while emphasizing that there must be respect. He noted, among other things, that if there is no respect for teachers, it is quite difficult to meet the demands they make.
He stated that one of the most common complaints from both teachers and students is that the media highlights an unfortunate incident that may have occurred outside of school hours. As a result, all the positive initiatives are overshadowed and do not receive the same level of media coverage.
