No specialty and had been investigated in the past: The doctor at the suspect center in Larnaca is under investigation

The PIS Wants to Put a Stop to Quackery

The police investigation is in full swing, in order to provide answers to the many questions raised regarding the operation of the medical center in Larnaca where hemodialysis machines were found. An investigative team has been formed to handle the case.

BYRON BYRONOS—Police Spokesperson: “Statements
will be taken from all those involved and from the individuals who conducted the inspections.”

A specific doctor also appears to be under scrutiny. Reports indicate that she is working at this center without a specialty, and her license had been investigated in the past. In fact, the emblem of the Pan-Cyprian Medical Association appears next to her name, and the association has already issued instructions to investigate the matter.

PETROS AGATHANGELOU—President of the PIS: “We had not
received any complaint with the PIS regarding her qualifications. For a center to entrust a colleague who lacks the experience and training to run a center suggests this is a matter for which the PIS may also have a responsibility to conduct an ex officio investigation.”

Just last March, an investigation at the center in question uncovered unlicensed Botox products.

ELENA PANAGIOTOPOULOU—Director of Pharmaceutical Services
““Following a complaint, we conducted inspections and found unlicensed Botox products there; we seized them and filed a report with the police.”

Following the completion of the island-wide survey of these centers, the Cyprus Medical Association committed to conducting a thorough investigation into doctors who have any form of collaboration with such centers, whether licensed or unlicensed.

The medical community is sounding the alarm about the long-standing phenomenon of quackery, which has flourished in recent years thanks to the internet. It urges citizens to be cautious about treatments advertised as “innovative” and “alternative,” as well as with products and services accompanied by therapeutic or diagnostic claims.

MICHALIS ANASTASIADIS—Chair of the PIS Ethics Committee: “When
a treatment promises a lot without explaining exactly how it will achieve it. Excessive claims of innovation or excessive claims of natural therapy.”

Every center is required by law to display its operating license, as well as the specialties it offers.
