The severe weather, which mainly affected the districts of Larnaca and Paphos, ultimately resulted in phenomena of limited scope and short duration; a 20-hour Orangeby the Meteorological Service, and a message was sent to citizens via the CY ALERT system.

Panagiotis Liasides, spokesperson for the Meteorological Service, explained on the show “With Love, Christiana” that the message did not contain emergency instructions, but rather provided weather updates and recommendations for precautionary measures. As he noted, weather experts’ forecasts indicated widespread weather phenomena from Paphos to Famagusta, and therefore it was deemed necessary to send the message.

“It wasn’t a Level Four alert; it wasn’t an emergency, but a warning. That’s why there was no siren sound. This message also included a link that directed us to the Meteorological Service’s website. Essentially, it was a reminder that a Yellow Alert was in effect and that we should exercise caution when traveling.”

Mr. Liasides made it clear that CY ALERT “is now part of our lives” and noted that just as we are “bombarded” daily with various advertising messages on our cell phones—which we pay attention to—we should also read these alerts carefully.

“Let’s take 10–20 seconds to stay informed, and if no action is required, let’s go about our lives.”

As for citizens who do not receive messages from CY ALERT, Mr. Liasides noted that they should update the software on their cell phones, call 1450, or visit the gov.cy website.
