The Anti-Corruption Authority Is Not Abandoning Its Investigation Into the Black Van Case

Her next steps
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The Anti-Corruption Authority does not intend to pursue the public dispute that erupted with the Legal Service. What it does intend to do is continue its investigation into the matter.

Since the Legal Service itself now acknowledges that the potential conflict of interest involving Savvas Angelidis was not investigated, the Authority will send a new letter requesting clarification from the Legal Service in order to pave the way for a new investigation. This weekend, Transparency Commissioner Haris Poyatzis plans to meet with one of the lawyers of Cypriot-British descent who would take on the investigation of the case.

Sources also report that the Legal Service never mentioned Savvas Angelides by name in its confidential letters to the Anti-Corruption Authority. The correspondence simply stated in general terms that all individuals and legal entities related to the case had been investigated. As a result, the Authority concluded that the Deputy Attorney General was among those individuals. Thus, it was deemed necessary to terminate the investigation.

The disagreement between the Authority and the Prosecutor’s Office sparked a new political storm.

“Everything must come to light,” says DISY, while AKEL speaks of an effort by the government and Pindaros to provide political cover for the rampant corruption.

ANDREAS PASIOURTIDIS—AKEL Member of Parliament: “They desperately want
to cover it up and ensure that nothing is discussed by anyone.”

DISY: “When
something involves ‘their own people’ in AKEL, they are ‘innocent’ from the outset, and no investigation is required.”

DIKO proposes that the classified letters that have been exchanged be declassified.

PANIKOS LEONIDOU—DIKO MP: “So
that even we, the uninformed, can understand. All the letters should be made public. Remove the classification.”

Also on the table is the proposal to appoint an investigative committee by the Cabinet.
