Serious social implications in the case of an attempted femicide involving a 46-year-old victim and an unnatural death involving a 53-year-old perpetrator in Limassol, as noted by Suzanna Pavlou, Director of the Mediterranean Institute for Gender Studies. Speaking on the Alpha News program, she noted that this is not an “isolated, tragic incident,” but rather the final stage in a pattern of escalating violence, intimidation, and power dynamics.
As she explained, public discussion of the case should always focus on the gender dimension and be viewed as the result of the imposition of control and power, rather than financial disputes between spouses, which may constitute the circumstances of this heinous crime but not its cause.
“We do not want violence to be presented as an understandable reaction to difficult circumstances. Far too many families face difficult circumstances and financial problems, and this certainly cannot be cited as the cause; it is a risk factor in this case.”
When asked to comment on the phrase “she’s my wife,” which the perpetrator allegedly said to an eyewitness, Ms. Pavlou assessed that this was not an expression of love, but rather an expression of possession, and she urged citizens to be wary of such behavior.
“Our view is that he expressed the belief that he has the right to decide even on the woman’s life.”
