“We don’t see the situation changing”: Transportation Minister Rejects Changes to Makarios Avenue

The Future of the Capital's Shopping Center Back Before Parliament

The serious problems faced by business owners, shop owners, and residents on Makarios Avenue and in the “heart” of Nicosia’s commercial center, due to the traffic regulations implemented by the Municipality of the capital and the relevant Ministry.

The Committee’s Vice Chair and ELAM MP Andreas Papacharalambous expressed concerns on the Alpha News program that the problem will not be resolved, since the new Minister of Transportation is opposed to any changes to the one-way streets. While acknowledging the aesthetically pleasing results of the projects in the capital’s commercial triangle, he admitted the “hard truth” of complete commercial decline.

“It’s not in line with real life, and we have to address it.”

Mr. Papacharalambous explained that the government’s justification—that the state risks losing European funding for the project in the event of changes— does not take into account that the 21-million-euro allocation applies to the projects in the Nicosia commercial triangle as a whole.

“What we’re saying is that Makarios Avenue should be opened up, allowing for moderate traffic flow at speeds of thirty kilometers per hour. We don’t want it to turn into a racetrack. Four years have passed, and we don’t see the situation improving.”
