Direct Democracy will respond, through its legal counsel, to the letter from the Commissioner for the Protection of Children’s Rights regarding a video by Fidias Panagiotou featuring children.
As the party states in its announcement, we fully respect the institution of the Commissioner for the Protection of Children’s Rights and fully agree that no child should be manipulated or exploited, and that children’s voices belong to thethe children themselves.”
However, as he notes, “in this specific case, there was no coaching, pressure, or exploitation of the children.”
“This is a spontaneous and relaxed conversation taking place during a social and athletic event, in which the children express themselves freely, with enthusiasm, humor, and varied responses, as anyone who watches the entire video can see.”
Protecting children from any form of manipulation goes without saying, Direct Democracy emphasizes, adding that it is equally important, however, to protect their right to have an opinion and to express it freely and spontaneously.
“After all, as the Commissioner herself points out in her letter, children have the right to free expression and to meaningful participation in social life.”
The Commissioner’s letter will receive an institutional and well-documented response from our Legal Counsel, with the respect due to the institution and with full reference to the facts and the applicable legal framework, the party concludes.
