Three fires broke out yesterday in the Paphos district, with the Forestry Department stating that all possible causes of the incidents are being investigated.
Speaking to CNA, the Forestry Department’s Press Spokesperson, Glafkos Kyriakou, stated that the fires broke out in the areas of Androlykos, Giolos, and Drouseia, with one of them occurring in a ravine.
Mr. Kyriakou also noted that in the wider area encompassing the Drousia – Lysou, several fire incidents are recorded from time to time, which, as he stated, suggest acts of arson. He clarified, however, that so far there is no evidence to support such a conclusion.
According to the Fire Department, at 11:27 a.m., a call was received reporting a fire involving dry grass and wild vegetation in the area of “Limnes,” near the community of Giolos. The fire burned an area of approximately one hectare, consisting of dry grass, wild vegetation, and a number of trees, while several private homes were endangered and had to be protected.
The Forestry Department assisted in the firefighting operation with three fire trucks and a water tanker, the Game and Wildlife Service, the Giolos Community Council, the volunteer group SupportCY, as well as a rented bulldozer and a water transport vehicle.
Later, at 3:45 p.m. yesterday, the Fire Department responded with two fire trucks from the Polis Chrysochous Fire Station to a fire involving dry grass and wild vegetation in the “Tertzia” area, near the community of Drouseia, to assist the Forestry Department.
According to a statement from the Forestry Department, this forest fire, in the “Monasteria” area within the administrative boundaries of Drousia, broke out at 7:40 p.m. and was brought under full control at 10:00 p.m.
The fire burned an area of five decares of low wild vegetation. Eight members of the Forestry Department participated in the firefighting operation with two fire trucks, while the Fire Department assisted with four personnel and two fire trucks.
