Holistic therapies, quantum medicine, alternative treatment approaches, and many other terms that suddenly entered our lives, in the wake of the tragic death of Giorgos Mazonakis during a plasmapheresis procedure at a clinic in Kolonaki performed by a doctor who advertised herself as a holistic physician.
The former Chair of the PIS Ethics Committee, Dr. Vassos Oikonomou, spoke about the entire issue on the “Alpha Kalimera” show, Dr. Vassos Oikonomou, former President of the PIS Ethics Committee, noting the need for this tragic event to yield at least “something positive and effective.”
As Dr. Oikonomou clarified, referring to colleagues who may be practicing such alternative or holistic therapies, “Everyone is free to hold their own opinion, but doctors must follow the guidelines approved by the relevant domestic, international, and global medical bodies.”
“A doctor is entitled to believe in quantum medicine, naturopathy, etc., but he is not legally permitted to apply methods that are not approved and, consequently, not licensed by the competent state authorities.”
Dr. Oikonomou also referred to an incident he experienced as a young doctor in Cyprus 40 years ago, when a colleague of his who was registered with the Cyprus Medical Council was performing treatments for hypertension using leeches while practicing medicine. As Mr. Oikonomou stated, the Cyprus Medical Association (PIS) made it clear to him that this type of treatment is not approved or licensed by the Cypriot authorities.
Of course, Mr. Oikonomou noted, if a therapeutic method is eventually approved by domestic and international bodies, it will clearly be incorporated into the country’s medical practices.
In any case, however, “anything that enters the human body by any route—especially if it is intravenous or injectable—must be approved by a doctor, not by a quack, nor the hairdresser, nor the beautician.”
In conclusion, Mr. Oikonomou called on everyone to “take this extremely serious problem seriously and for all relevant authorities to work together.”
