The police are still awaiting the Legal Service’s opinion regarding the crowdfunding campaign organized by Makarios Drousiotis, despite the fact that 15 days have passed since it was conducted. It should be recalled that the journalist, through a public appeal for financial support to cover his legal expenses in the wake of the “Sandy” and “State Mafia” cases, managed to raise over 52,000 euros in just three days.
Drousiotis’s move on August 10 prompted the Minister of the Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, who issued instructions to “send a letter to the police as the competent authority, informing them of the act in question and recommending that they proceed with an investigation into the possible commission of a criminal offense under the legislation governing fundraising campaigns.”
Upon receiving the letter, the police duly launched an investigation, referring the matter to the Legal Service and requesting an opinion as to whether the crowdfunding campaign conducted by Makarios Drousisfalls under the definition of a fundraiser and meets the legal requirements for conducting one.
When we contacted the police spokesperson, Byron Vyronos, to ask whether the police had ultimately received a response from the Legal Service, Mr. Vyronos told us that there has not yet been any development, with the officers in charge of the investigation remaining on standby for the legal opinion on the matter in order to proceed accordingly.
