Nicosia General Hospital announces two significant developments in the field of cardiac electrophysiology and implantable cardiac devices, both of which were performed for the first time in Cyprus.
First implantation of an Abbott AVEIR leadless pacemaker

In 2023, Nicosia General Hospital pioneered the launch of the Medtronic MICRA leadless pacemaker implantation program, which is now the most experienced program of its kind in Cyprus.
Building on this experience, the specialized team for cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) performed the first implantation of the state-of-the-art Abbott AVEIR system in Cyprus, further expanding the available treatment options for patients requiring a pacemaker.
Leadless pacemakers represent a significant advancement in modern cardiology, as they do not require traditional leads or the subcutaneous “pocket” for the pacemaker, thereby reducing some of the complications associated with them.
First Implantation of a Biotronik DX–CRT System in Cyprus
At the same time, the first implantation of a Biotronik DX-CRT system in Cyprus took place at Nicosia General Hospital, an innovative cardiac resynchronization technology for the treatment of advanced heart failure.
In selected patients, this system can achieve the functionality of a three-electrode system using only two electrodes. This approach can reduce the number of electrodes required and, consequently, some of the potential complications associated with implanting more leads.
These two procedures reaffirm the Hospital’s commitment to continuously improving healthcare services, the timely introduction of modern and innovative technologies into the Cypriot healthcare system, as well as its role as a center of excellence in the field of implantable cardiac devices.
The Interventional Electrophysiology and Implantable Cardiac Devices team at Nicosia General Hospital performs more than 450 cardiac device implantations annually, maintaining an exceptionally low complication rate comparable to that of similar specialized tertiary centers abroad.
The team has also consistently been at the forefront of introducing new and innovative technologies in the field of implantable cardiac devices in Cyprus. The results and data from the team’s work are regularly presented at international scientific conferences, highlighting the high standard of specialized care provided.
