Certain objects and pieces of jewelry are precious to people, not so much because of their monetary value as because of their sentimental value, especially when they are connected to loved ones and fond memories.
When these are lost during work or at the beach, they cause intense sadness and distress. However, this situation can be reversed, and the lost item can be found with the help of a volunteer metal detectorist from the Cyprus Metal Detecting Associations.

Using specialized equipment, they scan the area where the item was lost; in most cases, it is located and returned to its owners.
“And we decided that we would offer our services, our knowledge, and our equipment free of charge to help our fellow citizens who need us.”

There are more than 200 volunteer metal detectorists spread throughout free Cyprus.
The use of this equipment is permitted only in areas designated by the Department of Antiquities, which are listed on their official website.
“In order to use a metal detector, you must apply for and obtain a special permit from the Department of Antiquities, which is the government agency responsible for licensing.”

There are dozens of such incidents, which occur mainly during the summer months. One that stood out this year was the ordeal of a young woman who lost two wedding rings, heirlooms from her grandfather. As she was leaving the beach, deeply distraught, she was involved in an accident. The tow truck driver informed her about the team, which sprang into action immediately.
“Christos immediately sent a message to the whole team, and some of us came out. Fortunately, after a while, both wedding rings were found. Can you imagine how the young woman reacted at that moment when she burst into tears—anyway, she was overjoyed.”

Behind every successful search is a person, a volunteer who, even after a tiring day, chooses to devote their time to helping a stranger.
“You create the conditions where your hobby can benefit society, and I think we’ve succeeded in doing that.”
Christos Papadopoulos
Metal detectorists clear beaches of the enormous amounts of metal trash they find, helping to protect the environment by removing it.
