Well-known Turkish Cypriot journalist Sevgül Uludag, known for her advocacy on the issue of missing persons, has passed away.
In a social media post on Sunday evening, Sotos Ktoris, co-chair of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, wrote that “Turkish Cypriot journalist Sevgül Uludag has ‘passed away,’ a woman who dedicated her life to seeking the truth about Cyprus’s missing persons and their families.”
A Cypriot woman, he noted, “who never distinguished between the pain of Turkish Cypriots and that of Greek Cypriots. A woman who did not yield to the blackmail and threats of unrepentant murderers on both sides of the dividing line.”
“Sevgül believed that the truth has no nationality and that only when everyone’s suffering is acknowledged can there be true justice and reconciliation,” he added.
“She fought for the reunification of Cyprus, believing that this was the only way we could definitively overcome the wounds of the past,” he noted.
Mr. Ktoris concluded by stating that “Cyprus is poorer today because we have lost a courageous woman, a symbol of humanity and reconciliation in the history of this land. May her memory live on forever.”
