"One wonders whether they are being done either to blackmail the Ministry or for some other reason."

The updated text of the List of Appointments in Education will be sent to educational organizations in the coming days, the Minister of Education, Sports, and Youth, Athina Michaelidou, told CNA, while also expressing concern about their announced mobilization.

Specifically, when asked about the announcement by the three teachers’ organizations of a mobilization on October 8 to protest the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth’s plans regarding the education appointment system, Ms. Michailidou said, “This announcement concerns us, given that we are in the midst of consultation, dialogue, and cooperation with the teachers’ unions.”

She noted, however, that it is the inalienable right of labor unions to organize protests to advance their demands.

The first round of consultations has been completed, Ms. Michailidou said, adding that issues have been raised, questions have been answered, the teachers’ organizations have made recommendations, they have heard many of the organizations’ concerns, and based on the legal advice they will receive in the coming days, they will receive the updated proposal from the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth.

“Consequently, it is inappropriate to announce measures, and one wonders whether they are being taken either to pressure the Ministry or for any other reason. We emphasize that our proposal is on the table; it has been under discussion for some time, we are updating it in accordance with the law at all times, and they will have the updated version in their hands within the next few days,” he added.

He also noted that there is legislation under which the List of Appointees will be abolished in 2027.

“What the Ministry is doing through its proposal is ensuring that, first, we will have enough teachers to appoint while respecting those already working in the system. Therefore, the arguments being put forward do not hold water. And second, we are also ensuring quality in this system by abolishing the List of Appointees and maintaining an examination system,” she noted.

So, Ms. Michaelidou said, what is being proposed is a combination of prior service and an examination.

“Not just for today, but also for tomorrow. We are here not only to support union members and meet union demands, but also to ensure the quality of our education system,” she emphasized.

When asked about the issue of the textbooks expected to be delivered, the Minister of Education, Sports, and Youth said that the last ones will arrive by the end of September, adding that half have already arrived and the other half will arrive now.

“According to the reports we have, there have been no problems in the schools,” she concluded.
