Protopresbyter Ioannis Ioannou of Kyperounta has passed away, according to an announcement by the Holy Metropolis of Limassol.
The late Father Ioannis was born in Kyperounta in 1964. After completing his secondary education at the Apeiteio Gymnasium in Agros, he attended the Higher Theological School of the Church of Cyprus, from which he graduated in 1984. On August 19, 1984, he married Presbytera Panagiota Nearchou of Kyperounta, with whom he had five children: Kyriakos, Sotiria, Christina, Andreas, and Philothei.
He was ordained a deacon on November 18, 1984, at the Holy Church of Saint Marina in Kyperounta by the late Metropolitan Chrysanthos of Limassol. He enrolled in the School of Theology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where he completed his studies in 1989. During his studies, he served as a deacon, first at the Church of St. George in Karytsi and then at the Church of St. Philothea in the eponymous municipality of Athens.
During his studies, he earned a degree in Byzantine Music from the Athens Conservatory. Upon his return to Cyprus, he was ordained a Presbyter on April 23, 1989. He was promoted to Archpriest and Spiritual Father on July 17, 1991, by the late Metropolitan Chrysanthos of Limassol. He was appointed as a professor of theology and served for 25 years in secondary education. He served at the Holy Church of Saint Marina in Kyperounta and worked with godly zeal in the Kyperounta community, organizing the Charity Brotherhood and the parish’s catechism classes.
He founded the Kyperounta Christian Movement Choir. In 2002, he became the driving force and leader of the major effort to build the new Church of Saint Arsenios of Kyperounta, which was completed and inaugurated in 2013.
The funeral service for the late Father John will be held at the Church of Saint Arsenios in Kyperounta, tomorrow, Wednesday, August 12, at 4:00 p.m., presided over by His Eminence Athanasios, Metropolitan of Limassol.
